Pretoria – It seems rugby, cricket and football aren’t the only sports South Africans excel in.

23 archers represented the nation in the World Indoor Archery Competition in South Dakota, USA last week and brought back 18 medals, nine of them gold.

On Sunday the South African National Indoor Archery Competition took place in Pretoria and many of SA’s top archers participated.

A growing sport in SA, archery is being taken up by young and old, male and female, with entire families getting involved. eNCA.com went along to find out what’s attracting the competitors.

As communicated before, VP Indoor – Leonie Oosthuizen will not be in a position to accompany the Team to the World Indoor Archery Championship 2013 as team manager because of prior commitments. Marietjie Kleingeld – VP Field will take up the position of Team Manager.

Message from Marietjie Kleingeld WIAC 2013 Protea Team Manager

Dear SANIFAA Members,

The 2013 World Indoor Archery Championships (WIAC) will take place over the period 26 to 28 April 2013 in the town of Yankton, South Dakota, USA.  SANIFAA will be sending a National Protea Team to compete in the WIAC. If you are interested in competing in the 2013 WIAC as part of the SANIFAA Team, you are invited to forward your details to the WIAC 2013 Protea Team Manager for further details pertaining to your participation and cost implication.

As part of the SANIFAA TEAM it will be required of you to participate in the SANIFAA Apparel – track suit, caps, shirt ect.

As for the 2011 WIAC we are considering a SANIFAA Cub representative Team from our cub and schools development program with the main purpose to present to these young archers an opportunity to participate internationally and gain valuable knowledge and experience.  If you are interested in providing your child with this opportunity, please forward your and the cub’s detail to me.  Traveling with minors is always a challenge and we do recommend that one of the parents travel with the minor.  Further to this, it will be a requirement to obtain special permission from the Department of Education.  We will appoint a manager to attend specifically to the arrangements and needs of the SANIFAA cub team.

Your detail should not reach me later than 05 November 2013 – marietjie@sanifaa.org.za

Regards

Marietjie Fryer
WIAC 2013 Protea Team Manager

Score Cards

by Petrus van Breda

This weekend it came to my attention again how poor our archers record keeping are at a competition. The following must be adhere to at all times:

  • Dual scoring must always  be done.
  • Archers need to ensure all details are correct including their styles.
  • Please make sure one can read what you have written
  • Both score cards must be signed by the archer (Field and Indoor)
  • Both score cards must be signed by the person who scored that score card (if you are scoring yourself on one score card you need to sign as scorer as well)
  • On signing the score card you agree that the scores are correct and you accept it.
  • Both score cards must be the same and balancing
  • The archer is responsible to ensure that both his/her score cards are handed in for capturing purposes. Don’t expect others will do it for you. If both is not received or only one, the score will not be captured.
  • It is not the responsibility of the organisers, captures etc to run after archers and ensure they receive the score cards and that they are completed correctly.
  • Only after the scores has been captured and are verified one score card will be made available to the archer for his/her own records. Please don’t stand at the table and demand you score card, the organisers will release them when they have finalised the scoring. If you ask they will inform you when the score cards will be available. Note:- It might be even at the end of the competition.
  • The archer is responsible to ensure they collect the score card, the organisers will not keep the extra score cards after the competition
  • Archers are responsible to ensure they have their score cards as proof and can produce them when they are needed.

Message from Petrus van Breda

As most of you might know by now my dad pass away on Saturday 8 September 2012. During this time me and my family have receive support and messages from many archers all over the country. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for their emails, SMS messages, Facebook messages, calls etc of support and encouragement. It is appreciated by me and my family. Below is a message from us.

Dawie van Breda

Family of ArchersThis is also for me a sign that we are more than just taking part in archery, but are an archery family.

It’s a Girl

We just want to let you know of our latest addition to SANIFAA.

CONGRATULATIONS to Geoffrey and Marlie Hunt with the arrival of their little girl – Gemma. Mom & little Gemma are doing fine.  Dad is as proud as can be!!
Emma Hunt
With a smile like that – she will be a Gem!!!

Colours

Please take note of the following Urgent Notice regarding provinces, Clubs, Colours etc.:
  1. SASCOC (Gideon Sam) inform Stefan directly that an archer is not allowed to take part in competitions and represent a club or province where s/he don’t stay. For example an archer that live in the North West can not be a member of Magnum or The Bow Shop or Archers Edge and represent one of the clubs in the Northern Province, and on top of this get Northern provincial colours (live in North West and have North Gauteng colours?????). For the same token if one live in Kempton Park (border of Gauteng and Gauteng North) the archer need to join a Gauteng club as Kempton is part of Gauteng and not North Gauteng. In short no cross provincial borders representation is or will be allowed.

  2. SASCOC confirm that no archer is allowed to qualify for provincial colours at a national tournament. This mean that archers need to receive provincial colours before the the next National Tournaments. At the national tournament they will only be allowed to receive National colours. (Note:- Speak to your provincial reps for more detail regarding your provincial colours).

Note:-

  • The above is already in place since the last Nationals of Indoor, Field and 3D.
  • This might have some challenges to the provinces on new archers who joined late and have not received their provincial colours (depending on how the provinces structured their allocation of provincial colours) but participate in the nationals, and qualify with national colour scores. Archers need to have provincial colours before they can get national colours.
  • Cross border participation will not be allowed. The current archers who are practising this will need to have a discussion with their local provincial reps and ensure they adhere to the rules, where needed they and the local provincial reps will need to have a discussion with shop owners and clubs.
  • SANIFAA will be very stick in complying with the rules, including confirmation of affiliated clubs with provinces.
  • SANIFAA have no choice as to comply with SASCOC and do it 100% correct. Their words were “skuts moet reeds prov kleure verdien het voor ‘n SA toernooi”.
  • Archers can only represent one club in competitions
  • Currently we have no indication of how the provincial sports councils will allocate provincial colours. Example they might decide that it must be allocated at the provincial tournaments. Archers need to engage with their provincial reps regarding provincial colours.
  • Archers who have not paid their SANIFAA Membership fees will participate as visitors in a competition without exception (refer to SANIFAA Rules). Renewals is January of every year.

This is serious and we need to comply as quick as possible. It can have a dramatic impact on our sport for the future if we ignore it, to the point were colours (provincial, national and protea can be jeopardize).

If you have any questions please speak to your regional representative..

SA Archer

You will find the latest SA Archer on SANIFAA’s website plus some back issues. The SA Archer is full of interesting information about archery and what is happening in the archery world.

This is a call to every club and province that host a competition. An agreement was reached in 2011 that every club or provincial association that host a competition need to send a report of the event to Petrus (petrus@sanifaa.co.za) not later than 2 (two) weeks after the event to be published in the SA Archer.

Please could you submit articles and especially photos together with results  (this makes the magazine much more interesting). With your efforts, the magazine will continue to grow from strength to strength. To those of you who regularly submit articles and photos with your results, many thanks for your efforts. Please note that the cutoff date for submissions to the SA Archer is the 20th of the month for publication in the next month’s edition. Any articles received after this date will be published in the following month or subsequent editions of the SA Archer. Could all submissions please be sent to Petrus (petrus@sanifaa.co.za) using the Calibri 14 Point Font size for articles and scores using the Calibri 12 Point Font size.

Adverts for competitions need to be available at least 4 to 6 weeks before a competition to be able to make the SA Archer and allow  proper exposure to your fellow archers

Gauteng Provincial Colours

The provincial shirts for Gauteng archers achieving their provincial colours for the first time is now available from Johann du Preez (082-855-3923) or Petrus van Breda (082-453-5783). The shirts will be available at the Johannesburg Indoor Championship on 6 & 7 October 2012 or else at the Gauteng Field Championship 2012 on the weekend of 13 & 14 October 2012.

We are in the process to investigate the possibility of tracksuits for archers with Gauteng colours. Examples of the jackets will be available at the two shoots. If we receive enough Gauteng archers interested in acquiring these orders will be taken with payment.

Gauteng Provincial Field Championship

Please note that the starting time for Saturday 13 October 2012 are at 08:00 and not 09:00 as advertised. The reason being that our archers attending the 2012 WFAC are attending a function on the evening of the 13th and by moving the starting time it will allow them to be in time for the event.

We would appreciate it if you can spread the word to your fellow archers.

Western Cape Indoor Championship

Please note that a date has been set for the Western Cape Provincial Indoor Championships. The SANIFAA Calendar has been updated as such. It will take place at Protea Club on 30 September 2012. Attendance by Western Cape Archers at this event is a requirement for obtaining Indoor Provincial colours.

Quotes of the moment

  • The arrow is an extension of your soul.
  • Aim small, miss small.
  • “If archer shoots just for fun he has all his skill.

If he shoots for a golden price he becomes mad and blind.
His skill was not lessened, but the vision of the target changed him.”

Welcome to the Third Edition 2012
of
SANIFAA News
This is the third issue of SANIFAA News. We have been able to update the email list and currently we have 5 emails that can not be delivered, with 3 of them sorted. Our challenge is we don’t know how many company email servers just remove it and not inform us. This is a request to all of you who receive the SANIFAA News, please speak to your fellow archers and if they don’t receive it let them contact Petrus. Please ensure that if your email address change you inform Petrusasap about it. Email is our main communication tool.

A copy of the newsletter is available on the SANIFAA Website as well.

As you read this and are in Gauteng, the first rain for summer has start to fall. Soon eveything will be green and new. Drive safe when you are on the roads and remember to be prepared for rain when you participate in competitions.
The next few weeks will be very busy with a number of competitions taking place.

As most of you know the dates were announced by IFAA for the World Indoor Archery Championship 2013 (WIAC) – Friday 26 April to Sunday 28 April 2013. As we speak Leonie – VP Indoor is working hard at getting all in place and ready to inform you as archers on the way forward. The moment information and details is available it will be distributed to all archers.

In this edition of SANIFAA News:

North West Indoor Championship

The online registrations for the North West Indoor Championship will close this evening (6 September 2012) at 20:00. Please ensure you have registered and payment has been made to secure your place on the line.
Online registrations can be done by clicking here…….

Competition Online Registrations

The online registrations for competitions is working very well. The only challenge experience is the payments done by archers:

  • Archers do payments to the wrong accounts for example they are registering for WC Field, but the money is paid into SANIFAA’s account.
  • No payment confirmation is send to the main advertised email address of fax number to enable confirmation of the registration.

This is a request that you please ensure that payments is done to the correct account and confirmation is send.

Mpumalanga Field

The is just to highlight again that the Mpumalanga Provincial Field Championship 2012 will not take place on the weekend of 20/21 October 2012. Plans are to host the event in March 2013 in Nelspruit.

Western Cape Provincial Field Championship

Important information in terms of luggage from Amalia from Western Cape:
The Capetonions usually book the bow case in as one peace of luggage. They put some clothes in the bow case, the rest they take as hand luggage (7kg max). You may also take a laptop/back pack.
Archers must not pay the R 350 handling fee for their bows!!!! Sometimes the airline want to charge a weapon handling fee. On their website is it highlighted as sporting equipment and must go through oversized baggage.

Western Cape Indoor Championship

Please note that a date has been set for the Western Cape Provincial Indoor Championships.  It will take place at Protea Club on 30 September 2012. Western Cape will send out a formal invitation at a later stage, but it will be good if archers can diarize the event in the mean time.  Attendance by Western Cape Archers at this event is a requirement for obtaining Indoor Provincial colours.

Nationals Indoor Shirts

The shirts has been ordered as per payment and sizes supplied. Once received (all indications are in the next week or two) the archers will be informed on how they can collect the shirts.

SANIFAA

Welcome to the Second Edition
of
SANIFAA News

A number of our members has indicated that they enjoy the new format of communication. The SANIFAA News is not a replacement for the SA Archer or information appearing on our website but rather supporting communications to these channels. If you have any information that you would like to distribute to SANIFAA members please send these to Petrus van Breda.

The next few weeks will be busy as the calendar is quite full and with the 2012 World Field Archery Championship at the end of October 2012 in Argentina.

In this edition of SANIFAA News:

Appointment

As most of you know the position Secretary General has been vacant with Jonathan Steinmann resigning. The challenge we faced finding a suitable person for the position as soon as possible, that are able to almost step in and hit the road running. After following the process of nominations and voting by the provinces, we are in the fortunate position to inform you that we were able to find a person willing to accept the position, and that most of the archers already know.

Please welcome:
Petrus van Breda – our existing Webmaster and Database Administrator. Most of you have seen him at the competitions managing the registrations, scores etc and know he is passionate about archery. At the moment he will combine both positions into one. We would like to take this opportunity and welcome Petrus and wish him all the best in the new position.

Mpumalanga Field

The Mpumalanga Provincial Field Championship 2012 will not take place on the weekend of 20/21 October 2012. Plans are to host the event in March 2013 in Nelspruit.

Nelspruit Archery Club received the approval to host the event, and requested a change in dates. They had considered the following in their request to move the dates:

  • Fog during October in the Sabie region
  • In March the rainy season is almost a thing of the past

Dates will be confirmed at a later stage.

SA Archer – September 2012

Please note that the SA Archer for September will be later than normal. Charmaine is away and will only return early September to complete it.

The Classification Card

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE USE OF THE “CLASSIFICATION CARD”
Since the second half of the last year the IFAA Exec has been bombarded with questions about the “classification card” and the use of the card.

At the Council meeting in Dahn it was agreed that the rule of the IFAA that all the members have an accepted classification system will be enforced from 01 January 2011 and that archers who attend WFAC2012 need proof of “classification”.

The rule that an archer who is not classified will shoot in the highest class of that style during the event has over the years become the main reason why the IFAA member associations did no longer bother with the classification.
